Introduction to using self-reflection/self-assessment to support student learning:
This article from the Ontario Ministry of Education is a good introductory reading about self-reflection and self-assessment in the classroom. Topics covered include: how self-reflection/self-assessment benefits students; how self-reflection/self-assessment benefits teachers; tips for developing a culture of self-reflection/self-assessment; and specific tools and strategies to engage students in the process (December 2007).

Empowering Students Through Reflection and Feedback:
An extensive compilation of resources designed to support teachers in developing self-reflective students. Resources include readings, videos, lessons, and tools to support specific reflective practices such as portfolios, journaling, and interactive student notebooks.

Self-Assessment Video Library:
Included in this video library on self-assessment created by edugains is a viewing guide to facilitate learning about the assessment approaches modeled in the videos.

Student-Led Conferences and Student Portfolios:
"Changing Drivers: Putting Students in Charge of Their Success" by Peggy Aune and Jennifer Knutowski, teachers from Manatee Middle School in Florida, outlines the practices of student-led conferences and student portfolios and provides resources for teachers interested in implementing those practices as a way to support student self-reflection/self-assessment (2011).

Self-Reflection on Project Work:
A one-page graphic organizer created by the Buck Institute to promote student self-reflection after the completion of a project (PBL).

  1. The self assessment continuum from the video library will be beneficial to our group. The continuum gives us a a framework to keep our self assessments organized. The continuum will also provide students with a structure to use in their learning.
