This document provides a clear rubric for effective teaching practices. In particular, elements 1c1, 1c2, and 3a1 explain the ways in which clearly defined learning objectives are essential to student success. These elements are embedded in both the "Planning and Preparation" and "Delivery of Instruction" standards of teaching practice (May, 2013).

Exploring Different Formats for Daily Learning Objectives:

ABCD Learning Objectives:
This format for writing daily learning objectives includes: author; behavior; condition; and degree.

Writing Learning Objectives from the CCSS and NGSS:
This resource models how the CCSS and NGSS can be deconstructed and broken down into daily learning objectives, using the actual language from the standards themselves. Although, the complete Dataworks guides are not available for free, there is a sample guide for the CCSS in ELA and Math and another for the NGSS that is available for free download.

Stem-Verb-Outcome:
This format breaks learning objectives into three components: stem; verb; and outcome.

Resource Libraries:

A resource library developed by EngageNY to support teachers in understanding and using learning objectives to improve their practice.
